touch: out of range or illegal time specification: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:SS[.frac][tz]

애플 주소로 글을 보낸 사람이 최신 macOS 에서 빌드가 깨진 이유를 “the touch command on Darwin does not have a -d option” 이라고 적었다.

맥의 man touch 는 -d 를 YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:SS[.frac][tz] 한 가지로만 적는다.

-name old.log -mtime +2 로 찾는 시험이다.

맥이 받는 다른 입력: -t, -A, -r, -m

없는 파일에 -A -010000 을 주면 종료 코드 0인데 파일은 만들어지지 않았다. man touch 는 -A 가 -c 를 포함한다고 적는다.

touch_ago() {
  local spec=$1 n u t
  shift
  n=${spec%?}; u=${spec#"$n"}
  case $n in ''|*[!0-9]*) echo "touch_ago: bad spec '$spec' (e.g. 3d 12H 30M)" >&2; return 2;; esac
  case $u in S|M|H|d|w|m|y) ;; *) echo "touch_ago: bad unit '$u' (S M H d w m y)" >&2; return 2;; esac
  t=$(/bin/date -v-"$n$u" +%Y%m%d%H%M.%S) || return 1
  /usr/bin/touch -t "$t" "$@"
}

touch_ago 3d old.log 처럼 쓴다.

Purpose

To help a reader who ran a Linux-style touch -d "3 days ago" line on a Mac and hit an error, or whose test script hid the error and went on without an old file, choose a way to set a file time in the past on the Mac.

Key idea

The touch -d on this Mac (26.6.2) accepts only the YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:SS shape written down to the second (fractional seconds allowed). It rejected yesterday, 1 day ago, @0, a date alone, a time without seconds, a +09:00 offset and --date= with exit code 1 and created no file. A bash 3.2 function that computes the time with date -v and passes it to -t gave the same instant as GNU touch 9.11 N units ago within five seconds for seven units.

After reading

Replace the touch -d "N days ago" lines in your scripts with the touch_ago call below or with a touch -t computed by date -v, and check that nothing discards the touch error with 2>/dev/null or covers it with || true.

Contents

One-line summary: The Mac’s touch -d accepts only a complete time such as 2026-10-31 12:00:00 and rejects yesterday or 3 days ago with exit code 1, so replace it with the function below, which computes the time with date -v and passes it to touch -t to get the same instant as GNU touch.

On Linux you might create a three-day-old test file with touch -d "3 days ago" old.log. Run that line in a Mac terminal and the file time stays as it was; only one error line is left. This article shows, by running things on this Mac, what the Mac’s touch -d accepts and rejects, what happens in a script that discards the error, and whether the ways of building an “N units ago” time on a Mac give the same instant as GNU touch -d.

touch: out of range or illegal time specification: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:SS[.frac][tz]

The environment was /usr/bin/touch on macOS 26.6.2 arm64 and bash 3.2.57, on 2026-11-01. The test scripts fix the time zone to Asia/Seoul. The GNU touch used as the comparison is coreutils 9.11 from Homebrew, which is on this Mac under the name gtouch, and I ran it directly. I ran each of the two test scripts twice, and the second output matched the first character for character. A related story appears on the tz mailing list in 2020, where someone writing from an Apple address reported on the latest macOS that a build broke because “the touch command on Darwin does not have a -d option”. The touch on this Mac does accept -d now, but the shape it accepts is narrow.

A few terms. A file time is the last modification time (mtime) and last access time (atime) recorded on the file. An exit code is the number a command leaves when it ends; 0 means success. GNU is the command set many Linux distributions use, while the Mac’s commands are BSD-family, so the same name can take different options.

The shapes the Mac’s touch -d accepts and rejects

I changed the input one at a time and measured the exit code, the first line of the error, whether a file was created, and what the file time became. Of the fourteen inputs I tried, the Mac accepted only five: 2026-10-31 12:00:00, 2026-10-31T12:00:00, 2026-10-31T12:00:00Z and two inputs with fractional seconds. The other nine ended with exit code 1 and no file was created. The error text shows the shape -d expects but does not say which character of the input is the problem.

Input Mac /usr/bin/touch gtouch (GNU 9.11)
-d yesterday 1, no file 0, one day before now
-d "1 day ago", -d "3 days ago" 1, no file 0, one day and three days before now
-d tomorrow 1, no file 0, one day after now
-d @0 1, no file 0, 1970-01-01 09:00:00 (Seoul time)
-d 2026-10-31 1, no file 0, 2026-10-31 00:00:00
-d "2026-10-31 12:00" 1, no file 0, 2026-10-31 12:00:00
-d "2026-10-31 12:00:00", -d 2026-10-31T12:00:00 0, 2026-10-31 12:00:00 0, same
-d 2026-10-31T12:00:00Z 0, 2026-10-31 21:00:00 (Seoul time) 0, same
-d 2026-10-31T12:00:00.5, -d "2026-10-31 12:00:00,25" 0, 2026-10-31 12:00:00 (below the second not shown) 0, same
-d 2026-10-31T12:00:00+09:00 1, no file 0, 2026-10-31 12:00:00
--date="2026-10-31 12:00:00" 1, illegal option -- - 0, 2026-10-31 12:00:00

On the Mac, a date alone such as 2026-10-31 or a time without seconds such as 12:00 is also rejected. A trailing Z was read as UTC and became 21:00 Seoul time; without it the time was read as local. When I changed only the time zone to Asia/Seoul, UTC and America/Los_Angeles and gave the same 2026-10-31 12:00:00, the stored times (epoch seconds) from the Mac and from gtouch were identical in all three zones.

The GNU manual gives the standard -d shape as yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss[.frac][Z] and refers to “Date input formats” for words such as yesterday (the manual page I checked is the coreutils 9.12 edition, while the gtouch I compared against is 9.11). The Mac’s man touch documents only the single shape YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:SS[.frac][tz] for -d.

Discard the error and no old file appears, and an existing file keeps its new time

I measured what happens in a script that adds 2>/dev/null because the error is annoying. The test creates a three-day-old file and looks for it with find . -name old.log -mtime +2. Running touch -d "3 days ago" old.log 2>/dev/null on a file that did not exist gave exit code 1 and created no file. Running the same line on a file I had just created also gave exit code 1, and find found 0 lines. The same input through gtouch gave exit code 0 and find found 1 line. Adding || true turned the exit code into 0.

In a script with set -e, the line touch -d "3 days ago" old.log 2>/dev/null stopped the script with exit code 1 and no message, so the echo on the next line never ran. The script covered with || true reached the echo and ended with exit code 0. If you made old files to test a cleanup script and nothing gets deleted, suspect this line first. On a batch of five just-created files, each given one touch -d "3 days ago" with the error discarded, find -mtime +1 found 0 lines.

Other inputs the Mac accepts: -t, -A, -r, -m

The Mac’s touch has other ways to set a time besides -d. -t takes a number of the shape [[CC]YY]MMDDhhmm[.SS]. 202610311200, 202610311200.30, the two-digit-year 2610311200, and 10311200 with the year left out (read as this year, 2026) all exited 0 and gave 2026-10-31 12:00:00, 12:00:30, 12:00:00 and 12:00:00 respectively. 20261031120, one digit short, exited 1.

-A shifts from the file’s current time, not from now. On a file set to 2026-10-31 12:00:00, -A -010000 gave 11:00:00, -A 020000 gave 14:00:00, -A -250000 gave 2026-10-30 11:00:00 (one day and one hour earlier), and -A -0030 (minutes field 00, seconds field 30) gave 11:59:30, with the modification time and the access time changing together. Giving -A -010000 to a file that does not exist exited 0 but created no file. man touch says -A implies -c. So -A can age an existing file by N hours, but it cannot create a new test file.

-m changed only the modification time, so the access time that had been 12:00:00 stayed, and -r ref f2 copied the time of ref onto f2.

A bash function that computes the time N days ago

To get “N units ago” on a Mac, compute the time with date -v and pass it to touch -t. The function below takes arguments such as 3d, 12H and 30M. The units are S seconds, M minutes, H hours, d days, w weeks, m months and y years; note that minutes (M) and months (m) differ by case.

touch_ago() {
  local spec=$1 n u t
  shift
  n=${spec%?}; u=${spec#"$n"}
  case $n in ''|*[!0-9]*) echo "touch_ago: bad spec '$spec' (e.g. 3d 12H 30M)" >&2; return 2;; esac
  case $u in S|M|H|d|w|m|y) ;; *) echo "touch_ago: bad unit '$u' (S M H d w m y)" >&2; return 2;; esac
  t=$(/bin/date -v-"$n$u" +%Y%m%d%H%M.%S) || return 1
  /usr/bin/touch -t "$t" "$@"
}

Use it as touch_ago 3d old.log. Several files can be given, and names with spaces worked. A malformed spec (3, d, 3x, "3 d") exits 2 with a message and creates no file, and with no file name you get touch’s usage and exit code 1.

I made two files side by side, one with the function and one with gtouch -d "N units ago", and measured whether their times were within five seconds. All seven specs, 90S, 30M, 12H, 3d, 2w, 1m and 1y, agreed within five seconds. The month and year were measured on one date only, 2026-11-01.

For a more practical test I used touch_ago to create five files aged 0, 1, 2, 3 and 10 days in one folder and made the same five with gtouch in another, then ran find -type f in both. -mtime +1 gave f10 f2 f3 in both, -mtime +2 gave f10 f3, -mtime 1 gave f1, and -mmin +1500 gave f10 f2 f3; the results of the two folders were the same.

What I did not test

I did not test GNU touch run directly on Linux (the gtouch 9.11 on this Mac stands in), other macOS versions, zsh, the times that “a day ago” and “a month ago” produce in a time zone with daylight saving, month-end calculations, sub-millisecond times, or -h on hard and symbolic links. touch_ago uses BSD date -v, so it cannot be used on Linux; there you can keep using touch -d as it is. The public record is one item from 2020, and I did not check search volume.

Three-line summary

  • The touch -d on macOS (26.6.2) accepts only a time written down to the second (fractional seconds allowed) and rejects yesterday, N days ago, @0, a date alone, a time without seconds, a +09:00 offset and –date= with exit code 1, creating no file.
  • Discarding the error with 2>/dev/null leaves the old file uncreated or at its new time, so a find -mtime test quietly finds 0 lines, and a set -e script stops without a message.
  • The touch_ago function that computes with date -v and passes the result to touch -t agreed with gtouch within five seconds for seven units, and -A shifts from the file’s own current time and does not create a missing file.
